Background of the study
Illegal logging poses a severe threat to forest conservation efforts, leading to rapid deforestation and environmental degradation in many regions. In Akure South Local Government Area, unauthorized logging activities have significantly reduced forest cover, undermining conservation initiatives and affecting biodiversity (Adebola, 2023). The removal of trees not only disrupts ecosystems and wildlife habitats but also exacerbates climate change through the loss of carbon sinks (Olumide, 2024). Despite existing laws and policies, enforcement remains weak, and illegal logging continues to flourish due to economic pressures and inadequate regulatory oversight. Recent studies underscore the importance of effective monitoring and community involvement in combating illegal logging (Afolabi, 2025). The present research examines the scale and impact of illegal logging on forest conservation in Akure South. By analyzing the socio-economic and environmental drivers of illegal logging, the study aims to provide policy recommendations that strengthen conservation efforts and promote sustainable forest management practices (Oluwaseun, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Illegal logging in Akure South is causing significant forest degradation, threatening biodiversity and the ecosystem services provided by forests. Inadequate enforcement of environmental laws and economic incentives for logging have undermined conservation efforts. This situation necessitates a comprehensive investigation into the causes and impacts of illegal logging to develop more effective conservation strategies (Babatunde, 2024).
